Oulu International Rotary Club is applying for DSG funding for a humanitarian project to support the studies of immigrant high school students in Oulu during the Rotary year 2010-2011.

Description of the project:
It is a well-known fact that the attendance of immigrant youth in academic high school education is proportionally much lower than among the native population. Furthermore, a large number of immigrant students commencing high school studies drop out before graduation. This is an individual and personal problem for these students, and also represents a loss of talent and productive potential for the wider community.
Through this project Oulu International Rotary Club intends to support two or three promising immigrant youths in their high school studies in the following ways:
a) club members offer, free of charge, support teaching in different subject areas (e.g. English and Mathematics),
b) the club provides material and financial support for the acquisition of books and study equipment,
c) the club provides financial support in other study-related costs (e.g. study trips and excursions).

In the implementation of the project the club engages in partnership with Oulun Lyseon lukio which has long experience in offering academic education to immigrant students.
